As had been in headlines, recently in a trial, a drug trial has shown 100% eradication of cancer in patients at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan, US, or the first time. This was a case of rectal cancer, where after the treatment, patient were cured just with the drug abd without requiring any surgery or chemotherapy. This has had been grabbing headlines, as many have lost their near and dear onews to cancer.
It was a small trial, consisting of only 18 rectal cancer patients, who all took the same drug and aftertaking the drug, the cancer vanished in all patients involved in the trial,, undetectable by physical exam, endoscopy, PET scans or M.R.I. scans.
According to an American newspaper, in a very small clinical trial, 18 patients took a drug called Dostarlimab, for around six months, and in the end, every one of them saw their tumours disappeared.
After experiencing gruelling symptoms of previous cancer treatments, 18 of the patients, went for the trial expecting to have to go through these as the next step. However, no further treatment was needed, to their surprise in the end.
For the trial, patients took Dostarlimab every three weeks for six months. They were all in similar stages of their cancer – it was locally advanced in the rectum but had not spread to other organs. Dostarlimab is a drug with laboratory-produced molecules that act as substitute antibodies in the human body.
Now, the cancer researchers, who reviewed the drug told the media that the treatment looks promising, but a larger-scale trial is needed to see if it will work for more patients and if the cancers are truly in remission.
